McCollum Consultants is delighted to announce the addition of Dr Alexander Lawson to our network of expert witnesses. Dr Lawson is a highly experienced Consultant Clinical Scientist with extensive expertise in clinical and forensic toxicology, drug interactions, and mass spectrometry.
A Leading Expert in Toxicology and Clinical Biochemistry
Dr Lawson has worked in the NHS since 2010 and has been a Consultant Clinical Scientist since 2018. He is currently the clinical service lead for clinical biochemistry, immunology, and toxicology at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB). Additionally, he serves as the Pathology Lead for Research and Development and has played a pivotal role in advancing toxicology testing in the UK.
A co-founder of the Toxicology Laboratory at UHB, Dr Lawson has developed and accredited over 100 tests for drug screening and measurement. These tests are crucial for clinical management, diagnosing acute poisoning, and coronial investigations. Having reported on over 14,000 post-mortem toxicology cases, Dr Lawson is frequently called upon to provide expert court testimony.
Medico-Legal and Expert Witness Experience
Dr Lawson has undertaken Bond Solon expert witness training and accepts instructions from claimant and defendant law firms, as well as coronial and criminal cases. His expertise includes drug-drug interactions, medication non-adherence, and post-mortem toxicology, where he provides critical insights into toxicological findings in legal cases.
Research and Media Contributions
Beyond his clinical responsibilities, Dr Lawson is an active researcher, with published works on novel psychoactive substances, forensic toxicology, and drug adherence testing. His studies have contributed to the understanding of synthetic cannabinoids, opioids, and other emerging drug threats.
Dr Lawson is also a recognised media contributor, having provided expert insights on high-profile television and radio programmes, including Channel 4’s Deadly Diet Drugs Untold, BBC3’s Skinny Jab Uncovered, and Radio 4’s Inside Health.
