Medico-Legal experience

Dr Mahesh has undergone his expert witness training . He is registered with APIL, National Crime Agency (NCA) and the UK Register of Expert Witnesses. Dr Mahesh enjoys a full medico-legal practice representing both Claimant and Defendant law firms in actions relating to personal injury and clinical negligence. He holds weekly medico-legal clinics in Manchester but is happy to travel in order to conduct home and prison visits. He can produce reports within 6-8 weeks, sooner if required.

Clinical Practice & Experience

With over two decades of dedicated experience, Dr Venkat Mahesh is a highly respected Consultant Gastroenterologist renowned for his expertise, compassionate care, and commitment to improving patient outcomes. Dr Mahesh’s journey began with a medical degree from Bangalore University in 2000, followed by 12 years of specialist training in the UK, where he honed his skills in General Internal Medicine before specialising in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. His training spanned prestigious institutions, including liver transplant tertiary teaching hospitals and district general hospitals, equipping him with a wealth of knowledge and a deep understanding of complex gastrointestinal and liver conditions.

To further refine his expertise, Dr Mahesh completed an Advanced Interventional Endoscopy Fellowship at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Australia and advanced his nutrition training on the Intestinal Failure Unit in Salford, UK. These experiences have positioned him as a leader in advanced endoscopic procedures and nutritional management.

Since 2012, Dr Mahesh has served as a Consultant Gastroenterologist, initially at Blackpool Victoria Hospital and currently at Royal Blackburn Hospital, where he is the lead clinician for nutritional-related issues. He is also a key provider of advanced endoscopy services, including diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, dilation, endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), stent placement, feeding tube insertion, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), and ERCP. His expertise extends to leading therapeutic endoscopy provision for the Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Network, ensuring patients receive cutting-edge care.

Beyond his clinical practice, Dr Mahesh is deeply committed to education and innovation. As an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at Buckingham University, he shares his knowledge with the next generation of medical professionals. He regularly provides educational talks to GPs on gastroenterology, liver disease, and nutrition, empowering primary care providers to deliver better patient care. Dr Mahesh also holds pivotal roles in national medical organisations, including serving as a Medical Performance Assessor for the General Medical Council, Media and Education Co-ordinator for the UK & Ireland Endoscopic Ultrasound Society, and National QI Lead for Endoscopic Ultrasound for the British Society of Gastroenterology/Joint Advisory Committee.

Dr. Mahesh is passionate about patient education and holistic care. Clinical Interests

Dr Mahesh has a clinical interest in dyspepsia (gastric and duodenal ulcer, reflux), Barrett’s Oesophagus, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), chronic abdominal pain, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Crohn’s and Colitis, gastrointestinal cancer, diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, and malnutrition including complex gastrointestinal issues, obesity and malabsorption.

Research Interests

Dr Mahesh has been actively involved in clinical research throughout his training years and then as a consultant, both as principal and sub-investigator. His areas of interest are in endoscopy and nutritional interventions. These works have been published in peer review journals and presented at national and international meetings.Dr Mahesh has been the lead researcher and senior author of over 10 research projects since 2012. Most recently, as the Chief Investigator for 'Fiducial marker insertion in image guided radiotherapy for oesophageal cancers', he received a grant of £25,000 from Rosemere Cancer Centre. He continues to contribute as a sub-investigator in several national and international endoscopic ultrasound related studies.

Summary of Publications

To date, Dr Mahesh has co-authored more than 30 publications, presented in national and international meetings; all leading to significant changes in practice. He continues to be active academically and has several ongoing research projects related to endoscopic ultrasound and ERCP.

Teaching & Training

Nationally, Dr Mahesh is the Education and Media Co-ordinator for UK and Ireland EUS Society and the Quality Improvement Lead for endoscopic ultrasound for the British Society of Gastroenterology/Joint Advisory Group. Currently, he is the Medical Performance Assessor for the General Medical Council; completing reports for investigations and attending hearings. Previously, he was the Associate Director of Medical Education, a Royal College Tutor and TSTL for Medicine and an International Medical Doctors Tutor at Blackpool.
