Overview

Medico-Legal experience

Dr Morley is happy to be instructed by both Claimant and Defendant law firms in personal injury and clinical negligence actions. He has produced reports for over 50,000 Coroners cases, has provided over 200 opinions, and appeared as an Expert Witness in over 50 criminal and civil cases.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Dr Stephen Morley trained at the Kings College Hospital London and qualified in 1993. After a medical rotation he specialised in clinical biochemistry and then trained as an Analytical and Clinical/Forensic Toxicologist. Dr Morley is currently the clinical lead for Clinical and Forensic Toxicology at the University Hospital Leicester.

Clinical Interests

Dr Morley has a broad forensics and clinical toxicology workload. He has a particular interest in post-mortem toxicology, cases involving drugs and driving, drug facilitated crimes, and those of murder and manslaughter. He is often instructed where there is a clinical treatment, such as insulin affecting function and possible leading to death, acting as an expert in two Court of appeal cases (R v Winzar and R v Norris (Campbell)), as well as cases of salt poisoning in children, dehydration, or where a clinical chemistry laboratory has not followed guidelines that have contributed to deaths.

Research Interests

Much of Dr Morley’s research is based around the effects of emerging drugs (such as SPICE and the nitazenes). He is also a Supervisor of three PhD students who are investigating insulin toxicology, and the demographics and epidemiology of drugs deaths, thought a research group called NPSAD.

Management Experience

Dr Morley founded the UK Clinical Toxicology Network which is wiring guidelines for hospital investigations of poisonings in the UK. He was the chair of the UK toxicology group, LTG (formerly the London Toxicology group).

Summary of Publications

Dr Morley has over 50 publications and 70 meeting abstracts. He has also co-authored national guidelines for clinical, forensic, and post-mortem toxicology investigations.

Teaching & Training

Dr Morley is a visiting lecturer for the Masters course in analytical toxicology at the Kings College London, and a visiting lecturer on the Forensic Masters course in Jamaica. He has lectured internationally including Europe, USA, Asia, and the Caribbean.
