Overview

Medico-Legal experience

Dr Das has extensive medico-legal experience and accepts instructions from both criminal and civil instructing parties. Dr Das has completed medico-legal training and regularly participates in continued professional development for his clinical practice and medico-legal work.Dr Das has given oral evidence on over 40 separate occasions, for both criminal and civil court. This has included other countries, such as Canada, and Gibraltar. He has been involved in high profile cases, including the criminal trial of a serial killer.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Dr Das qualified from the University of Edinburgh with bachelor degrees in pharmacology as well as medicine and surgery. He has since obtained a masters degree in psychiatric research and is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Dr Das has a wide experience of assessing and treating people with mental illnesses, and specialised experience in mentally disordered offenders in a variety of settings, including courts prisons and secure psychiatric units. He regularly prepares medico-legal reports for a variety of courts, a including criminal court, civil court, immigration tribunals and Mental Health Review Tribunals and has authored over 1,000 criminal and civil court reports in his career.

Dr Das was lead psychiatrist for the NHS under the Harrow Crown Court and Willesden Magistrate’s Court Liaison & Diversion Scheme. This involved writing brief court reports within a very short turn-over at court (often within an hour or 2), as well as formally advising the court about major psychiatric issues (including fitness to plead).

Clinical Interests

As a forensic psychiatrist, Dr Das is experienced in reporting on a wide range of psychiatric damages to adults, adolescents and children. For civil court matters, Dr Das specialises in high value personal injury cases such as clinical negligence (i.e. breach of duty, causation, condition and prognosis, psychiatric consequences as a result of incidents and accidents (e.g. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, issues at work, physical disability, historic sexual abuse cases), immigration detention assessments and capacity assessments.  For criminal court matters, Dr Das has a broad range of experience in mental health matters such as fitness to plead, mental health defences and capacity to form intent, risk assessments of offending and assessments in psychiatric hospitals, prisons and immigration centres.

Management Experience

Dr Das has led numerous Multi-Disciplinary Teams within secure psychiatric units. He has also headed a forensic Community Mental Health Team in the Barking area, and a mental health team in HMP Bronzefield.

Summary of Publications

Dr Das has extensive experience as a media psychiatrist. He hosts a YouTube channel that dissects a whole range of topics related to mental illness and criminality. He has appeared on numerous TV and radio shows and documentaries to discuss his work and comment on cases; including ITV’s This Morning, BBC Moring Live, Channel 4, Channel 5, Sky News, Radio 4. I feature in a documentary currently on Netflix (‘When missing turns to Murder' – Season 3).Dr Das has written a book outlining his professional memoirs, titled: ‘In Two Minds; stories of murder, justice and recovery from a Forensic Psychiatrist’ - published by Sphere Publishers; a subsidiary of Little, Brown/Hachette. It has sold over 17,000 copies.Dr Das is a regular guest speaker at CrimeCon, the UK’s largest true crime convention.
