Overview

Medico-Legal experience

Dr Mittal has been undertaking medico-legal work for a number of years, giving evidence in both Crown and Family Courts. He has achieved his certificate in expert witness training. Dr Mittal is happy to be instructed by Claimant and Defendant law firms in all aspects of safeguarding children and child protection cases, including physical abuse, neglect, fabricated and induced illness (FII) and perplexing presentations. He is registered with the UK Register of Expert Witnesses. To formulate his reports, Dr Mittal uses a synthesis of scientific evidence and research, incorporating multiple case specific data sources, both current and historic. Dr Mittal endeavours to provide a competent and impartial opinion, to enable the court to discharge its fundamental duty with regard to the child's welfare that is paramount. Dr Mittal provided 40 reports for the Family Courts and 2 for Criminal Courts between 2022-23. He attended 2 expert meetings and gave evidence 4 times in Family Courts and twice in Criminal Courts.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Dr Mittal has been working in paediatrics for approximately 30-years; during this time he has gained approximately 17 years experience in child protection. Dr Mittal has managed cases in general paediatrics, including children with developmental delays, cerebral palsy, neurodevelopmental problems such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism and also non-accidental injuries. Since 2009, he has worked as the Designated Doctor for Child Protection and Child Deaths. During this time, he has been involved in the reviewing of cases with non-accidental injuries, child deaths, multiagency training for professionals and drawing up local policies and procedures in relation to child protection.

Dr Mittal has an extensive paediatric background, with experience in matters such as child protection, including neglect, fabricated and induced illness (FII), child deaths, behavioural paediatrics and child development & disability.

Teaching & Training

Dr Mittal is involved in teaching medical students, foundation doctors and paediatric trainees in various topics in paediatrics. He also provides multiagency safeguarding training to the police, professionals in health, education, and other agencies. Dr Mittal supervises trainee paediatricians in clinical assessments of children referred for suspected child abuse and neglect. He also attends strategy meetings, case conferences and other multiagency meetings in relation to these cases. As part of his role as the Designated Doctor for Child Deaths, Dr Mittal organises multiagency rapid response meetings following the sudden and unexpected death of a child (SUDIC). He also attends the Pan-Cheshire Child Death Overview Panel (CDOP) meetings and represents his Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) on the panel.
