Clinical Practice & Experience

Dr Marta Jansa Perez graduated from the University of Barcelona in 1990, completed an MSc in Genetics and Microbiology in 1992, and earned a PhD in Molecular Genetics from the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona in 1995. In 2009, she obtained a Diploma in Clinical Embryology from the Royal College of Pathologists. She is HCPC Registered as a Clinical Scientist. Her career includes postdoctoral research at the University of Auckland, New Zealand (1995-1997), and roles as Laboratory Manager and Scientific Director at Fertility Associates Hamilton (1998-2001), Senior Embryologist at Melbourne IVF (2001-2002), and Laboratory Manager at London Fertility Centre (2002-2003).

Dr Perez served as a Senior Embryologist at CRM London (2005-2005), Consultant Embryologist at King’s College Hospital (2005-2012), Head of Embryology at Wolfson Fertility Centre (2012-2020), and Director of Embryology and HFEA Person Responsible at the British Pregnancy Advisory Service – Bridge Clinic London from 2020 to 2024. In 2025, she joined the Bourn Hall clinic in Wickford as the Lead Embryologist. Additionally, she lectures at the Imperial College London and supervises research students and STP trainees. She has been the Treasurer for the British Fertility Society from 2020 to date.

Clinical Interests

Dr Jansa Perez is interested in all aspects of gamete function and embryo development, mostly for clinical application but also for research. She has led several very successful embryology laboratories and as such has a wealth of knowledge in best practice, quality management systems and legal requirements. She focusses her and her teams practice on constant improvement and patient centered evidence-based care.

Research Interests

Dr Jansa Perez is interested in embryo culture and cryopreservation and as such her laboratory participated in the e-freeze trial. She has been involved in research on gene expression in granulosa cells as well as the use of Kisspeptin to induce ovulation whilst reducing the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. She is currently doing some research comparing different AI systems to optimise the selection of embryos for transfer.

Teaching & Training

Dr Jansa Perez is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London, where she teaches and supervises students and embryology trainees in the STP scheme. She has trained laboratory practitioners and embryologists under the ACE scheme and participated in educational sessions for GPs and other healthcare professionals. She regularly teaches at BFS Study Week and STEM events, and has conducted educational sessions on research, embryology, and QMS, as well as courses abroad at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, in India, and in clinics in Nigeria.

Prizes and Awards

2011: Claire Gillott Memorial Prize (ACE) for the leadership of the embryology at King’s College Hospital ACU.

2019: Imperial College NHS Trust ‘Make a Difference Award’ for service provision at the Wolfson Fertility Centre.
