Overview

Medico-Legal experience

Dr Cusack has an active medico-legal practice and experience of producing court reports and expert neonatal opinion. He has completed over 50 expert reports with a mixture of claimant and defence work, including providing neonatal expertise to Greater Manchester Police and to the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman. Dr Cusack has given evidence in Criminal courts, Coroners Court, and been involved in civil cases and appeals at the Royal Courts of Justice. He is happy to take on both Claimant and Defendant instructions.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Dr Cusack graduated from the University of Leicester Medical School in 1996. Since then, he has gained numerous years of experience in multiple UK hospitals and experience in Australia, specialising in Paediatrics and Neonatology. Dr Cusack boasts 15 years of experience working in a Regional Perinatal Lead Neonatal Intensive care with over 12000 deliveries per annum. Since 2008, Dr Cusack has held the position of Consultant Neonatologist at the University Hospitals of Leicester Neonatal Service.

Clinical Interests

While Dr Cusack has gained extensive experience working in Neonatology, he has particular clinical interests in neonatal cardiology and resuscitation.

Research Interests

Dr Cusack has received formal training in qualitative and quantitively research as part of his masters’ degree. He has recruited and consented patients for multiple national trials, including the original TOBY trial for neonatal cooling. Dr Cusack was the Leicester PI for the Baby Oscar Study (an RCT looking at early targeted ibuprofen in treatment of patent ductus arteriosus) and current Co-PI of a trial looking at neonatal cooling with the University of Bristol. Dr Cusack is a named author of the national and European wide guidelines on Neonatal Resuscitation and is a core member of the Resuscitation Council UK Newborn Subcommittee.

Management Experience

While working of the Leicester Hospitals, Dr Cusack took on the management roles of Head of Service for Leicester Neonatal Service (2013-2020), Deputy Clinical Director for Women and Children’s Services (2020-2023) and is now the Clinical Director for Womens and Childrens. He is one of seven clinical directors responsible for clinical leadership for the University hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.

Teaching & Training

Dr Cusack is dedicated to medical education; he currently leads a well-established Neonatal Education Team. He is the Neonatal Lead for undergraduate education and the Clinical Lead for the Leicester Neonatal Simulation Team - one of the UK’s foremost simulation training teams with an international reputation. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Leicester Medical School. Furthermore, he designed, programmed, and implemented a web-based training package for the neonatal trainees at in Leicester.
