Clinical Practice & Experience

Dr Sarma has worked as a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at the Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester University Hospitals NHS Trust since 2008. He studied at the Gonville and Caius College, University of Cambridge and the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine at the Addenbrookes’ Hospital. Dr Sarma completed his general medicine and surgical training in Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, and Nottingham. Dr Sarma then undertook higher specialist training in Cardiology at the University Hospital Trusts of Leicester and Edinburgh before a sabbatical at the Cardiovascular Center in Aalst, Belgium.

Clinical Interests

Dr Sarma also has accumulated decades of general cardiology experience and participates in the cardiology on-call service at Manchester University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He routinely manages patients presenting with heart failure, cardiac valve infections, blood pressure problems and cardiac rhythm disorders. Dr Sarma is particularly interested in coronary artery and heart valve disease and cardiovascular health improvement. Dr Sarma undertakes a wide range of complex percutaneous (keyhole) procedures, including stenting of narrowed and blocked heart arteries and valve treatments. He has expertise in advanced techniques, including intravascular ultrasound, optical coherence tomography, rotational atherectomy and intra-vascular lithotripsy. Dr Sarma introduced percutaneous transcatheter mitral valve repair to Manchester and also implants TAVI valves as part of a high-volume service. He has special expertise in the keyhole management of failing mechanical heart valves.

Research Interests

Dr Sarma completed his PhD as a Wellcome Trust Clinical Training Fellow at the University of Edinburgh, studying molecular mechanisms that underpin coronary artery disease. After completing his clinical training as a Clinical Lecturer in Edinburgh, Dr Sarma was awarded a British Heart Foundation Advanced Scholarship to work at the Cardiovascular Centre at the OLVZ Hospital in Aalst, Belgium, where Dr Sarma continued his translational research in cardiology. Dr Sarma has participated in major international conferences, presenting original research data and delivering didactic teaching. As faculty for several international interventional and general cardiology meetings, Dr Sarma has demonstrated specific techniques to numerous other consultant colleagues and trainees. Dr Sarma actively recruits to large international clinical trials and publishes in high-impact clinical journals.

Management Experience

Dr Sarma has held managerial roles in Manchester as Clinical Director and lead for cardiology clinical governance. Dr Sarma is the Joint Clinical Lead for the Cardiovascular Division of Health Innovation Manchester, which delivers Manchester's Academic Health Sciences Centre programme. Dr Sarma is a founding council member for NHS England’s North West Clinical Senate, and has led hospital service reviews on behalf of NHS England.

Teaching & Training

Between 2002 and 2006, Dr Sarma was a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. Dr Sarma has held subsequent positions as an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester and has aided the supervision of clinical PhD students as well as medical undergraduates and allied health professionals. Dr Sarma is the course director for the Catheter Lab Emergency Medical Simulation (CLEMS) Course, and co-authored recent guidelines on the management of emergencies in the cardiac cath lab. Dr Sarma has been a member of the British Cardiovascular Society programme committee until 2022, contributing to the organisation of the UK’s main general cardiology professional development event.
