Overview

Medico-Legal experience

Dr Booth has undergone expert witness training and has completed the Cardiff University Bond Solon Civil Expert certificate. Dr Booth accepts instructions from both Claimant and Defendant law firms in personal injury and clinical negligence cases. Dr Booth has extensive experience of presenting evidence in the coroner’s court.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Dr Booth is currently the Clinical Lead for Critical Care at Salford Royal, Northern Care Alliance, covering a 40 bedded mixed neuro-general critical care unit with >2000 admissions per annum, one of the largest units of its type in the UK. He has worked in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia for a total of 19 years, with the last 12 years as a Consultant at Salford Royal.

In addition to this, Dr Booth is the Regional Clinical Lead for Organ Donation, a position he has held since 2019.

Clinical Interests

Dr Booth has a wide range of clinical interests in both intensive care medicine and anaesthesia. Dr Booth’s clinical interests in intensive care medicine covers all aspects of general intensive care including sepsis, COPD, asthma, pneumonia, cardiac arrest ARDS, renal failure and hypoxic brain injury. He has expertise in the assessment of the critically ill patient and decision-making surrounding appropriateness of intensive care admission, do-not-resuscitate orders and withdrawal of treatment. In addition he has a specialist interest in neurocritical care, with expertise in conditions including trauma, traumatic brain injury, sub-arachnoid haemorrhage, stroke, neurological death and seizures. Dr Booth has expertise in general anaesthesia, spinal and epidural anaesthesia as well as airway management, endotracheal intubation, one lung ventilation, bariatric anaesthesia, upper gastrointestinal anaesthesia, intravenous access and both pre- and peri-operative medicine.

Management Experience

Dr Booth has been the Clinical Lead for Salford Critical Care unit since 2020, a role which has included helping lead one of the largest mixed neuro-critical care units in the UK through the COVID-19 pandemic. His leadership role has given him extensive exposure to the investigation and management of clinical incidents and patient complaints.Dr Booth has also been delivered clinical leadership in Organ Donation since 2013, initially as a hospital Clinical Lead, and since 2019 as the Regional Clinical lead for the North West of England. This includes leadership of a network of intensive care consultants across the region, giving him a unique insight into the wider challenges and clinical experience of patients in multiple intensive care units. Through this role he has become a regional expert in the diagnosis of death by neurological criteria (brainstem death) and devastating brain injury. Whilst in training Dr Booth was a board member of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine and a Council member of the Intensive Care Society.

Teaching & Training

Dr Booth holds a Post-graduate Certificate in Work based Placed Medical Education (PGCert) and has acted as an educational supervisor for doctors training in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia throughout his consultant career. He has trained Advanced Critical Care Practioners including the first such posts at Salford in 2016. Dr Booth was as the course director for an Advanced Communications Skills course at Salford Royal, instructed on some of the most challenging communication situations faced in hospital medicine. He has also led simulation courses in deceased donation in his role in organ donation.
