Medico-Legal experience

Dr Haidar Alwan-Walker has undertaken medico-legal reporting for a number of years, and has undergone his expert witness training. Dr Alwan-Walker has also given evidence in court and is happy to be instructed by Claimant and Defendant law firms in both personal injury and clinical negligence actions.

Clinical Practice & Experience

In August 2008, Dr Haidar Alwan-Walker qualified as a Radiology Specialist Registrar; he remained in this position at the North-West Radiology Training Scheme until August 2014, when he became a Consultant Radiologist at the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT). Dr Alwan-Walker was also Clinical Director at the Wythenshawe Hospital Radiology Department between July 2017 and April 2018. Dr Alwan-Walker is is currently co-Clinical Director of Adult Radiology at Manchester University Foundation Trust (MFT), primarily based at Wythenshawe Hospital, working in one of the busiest Radiology departments nationally.

Dr Alwan-Walker has a keen interest in digital health and informatics, with experience in deployment of major IT systems by working closely with IT/Informatics colleagues. He was involved in the deployment of the Radiology Information System at his trust in May 2014, and in the procurement and deployment of the new Greater Manchester PACS systems in Sept 2021.  He was involved as part of a large team with the deployment of the new electronic patient records system at MFT in 2022.  Dr Alwan-Walker is currently the deputy Clinical Chief Information Officer for his hospital division (CSS).

Clinical Interests

Dr Alwan-Walker has special interests in all aspects of Gastrointestinal (GI) and GI Interventional Radiology, as well as General Paediatric radiology.

Research Interests

Dr Alwan-Walker has been involved in several significant projects, including the deployment of the current research information system (CRIS) and the Cancer Vanguard Project. He was also a board member of the Greater Manchester regional Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS) procurement between 2014 and 2019 and is currently the Clinical Lead for the same within the Radiology Department, having a heavy involvement in the deployment within the Trust.

Summary of Publications

Dr Haidar Alwan-Walker was involved in the research into the imaging of blast injuries following the Manchester Arena attack in 2017; “Bomb blast imaging: bringing order to chaos”, Clinical Radiology Journal, May 2018.He has also contributed to the publications “Temporary Caecostomy in Large Bowel Obstruction in Neutropenic Colitis” and “Extramedullary plasmacytoma of the tongue base: A case report and clinical review of head and neck plasmacytoma”.

Teaching & Training

Dr Alwan-Walker has vast experience in teaching; he is currently the Education Supervisor, as well as Clinical Supervisor, for trainees in radiology. Since 2015, he has also been an Appraiser for several consultants in the Radiology Department, and now appraises 8 consultants yearly. He has also qualified in the Fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR) 2A and 2B in teaching and is an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) Examiner. Dr Alwan-Walker provides interventional radiology teaching and has also been involved in the Radiology Specialty Trainee first year (ST1) interviews in London.

Winner of the “Highly Commended Poster Prize” at the UK Radiological Society Conference for “Dermoid Cysts – Benign Ovarian Teratomas; A Radiological Review” – June 2009.
