Dr Kitchen is happy to take instructions from both Claimant and Defendant.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Dr Kitchen graduated the from University of Manchester in 2007 with his MBChB. He went on to complete further training across various Greater Manchester Hospitals. In 2012, Dr Kitchen gained his Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists and PhD from the University of Manchester 2019. Since then, he has gone on to work with the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) as an Academic Clinical Lecturer (2018-2021) and completed NIHR the Future-Focused Leadership Programme.

Since 2020, Dr Kitchen holds the position of Honorary Consultant Anaesthetist at the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.  and Senior Clinical Lecturer for the University of Manchester.

Clinical Interests

Dr Kitchen is experienced at treating complex medical patients with a particular interest in anaesthesia for kidney transplantation, trauma, orthopaedics, and sedation. He is experienced at providing sedation alongside regional anaesthesia for patients with complex medical conditions, covering a wide variety of interventional disciplines including orthopaedic surgery, GI endoscopy, dental, transplant vascular access and eye operations at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. Gareth has a special interest in digital sedation.

Research Interests

Dr Kitchen has Lead and collaborated on various research projects as Chief Investigator and a Co-Investigator. These have included: Project Airways (2024-2029) – Chief Investigator, studying the clinical and cost effectiveness of advanced airways protection device vs. conventional endotracheal tubes in ICU patients. Enhanced monitoring for Better Recovery and Cancer Experience in Greater Manchester – Co-Investigator. Continuous Signs Monitoring in Covid-19 Patients (COSMIC-19) – Co-Investigator. Circadian Disruption on ICU (CADI) Study – Chief Investigator.

Management Experience

Dr Kitchen is the Chief Investigator for Protect Airways, a national clinical effectiveness trial. Dr Kitchen has completed the NIHR Future-Focused Leadership Programme.

Summary of Publications

Dr Kitchen has authored, co-authored, and reviewed extensively. Recent papers Dr Kitchen has worked on have included: ‘External Validation of Prognostic Models in Critical Care: A Cautionary Tale From COVID-19 Pneumonitis’, and ‘The association between time of in hospital cardiac arrest and mortality; a retrospective analysis of two UK databases.’He has also co-authored the ‘Handbook of Clinical Anaesthesia’, 4th Edition, 2017.

Teaching & Training

Currently, Dr Kitchen is a Senior Clinical Lecturer for the University of Manchester. Previously, he had also held the positions of Academic Clinical Lecturer (2018 – 2021) for NIHR and later Senior Clinical Lecturer (2021 – 2023).
