Clinical Practice & Experience
Having established the North West Regional Pelvic, Acetabular and Young Adult Hip Service in 1994, Mr Clayson has become a nationally recognised expert in the management of polytrauma patients, pelvic fractures and complex problems of the hip joint and pelvic bones, regularly receiving referrals from outside the North West of England. In addition to the management of pelvic trauma patients plus complex injuries of the hip, knee and lower limb, he has been actively involved in the establishment of Major Trauma Centres and networks across the Northwest of England. As an NHS Consultant at the Wrightington Specialist Orthopaedic Hospital, Mr Clayson’s elective expertise lies both in the field of joint replacement surgery of the hip and knee, and the assessment and management of young adult hip pain including the treatment of patients with hip dysplasia and hip impingement. This treatment includes the performance of specialised procedures to realign the bones around the hip (osteotomy) as an alternative to joint replacement in younger patients and he is one of only a few surgeons in the UK who has regularly performed Ganz Periacetabular Osteotomy surgery.
Clinical Interests
Mr Clayson’s clinical interests lie in adult pelvic, hip, and knee reconstructive surgery and the treatment of polytrauma patients and general lower limb orthopaedic trauma. Mr Clayson receives weekly referrals from Consultant colleagues of complex cases and operates personally on approximately 50-60 pelvic trauma cases each year. In addition to lower limb orthopaedic trauma, he also specialises in performing pelvic and acetabular osteotomies for patients born with pelvic/acetabular dysplasia together with complex hip and knee replacement surgery.
