Overview

Medico-Legal experience

Dr Ashworth has been acting as an expert witness for a number of years. He has undergone expert witness training and has completed the Cardiff University Bond Solon Civil Expert certificate. Dr Ashworth receives instructions from both Claimant and Defendant law firms in personal injury and clinical negligence cases.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Dr Ashworth has been a substantive Consultant in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia & Intensive Care Medicine since 2012. He is the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) Deputy Director at the Wythenshawe Hospital, part of the University of Manchester NHS Foundation Trust, and has led the hospital in their development and implementation of an extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) programme, which very few centres in the UK currently offer.

Clinical Interests

Dr Ashworth has a special interest in cardiothoracic anaesthesia, anaesthesia for heart and lung transplantation, general and regional anaesthesia, and intensive care medicine. He has a particular clinical interest in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), mechanical circulatory support (MCS) and transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE).

Research Interests

Dr Ashworth has over 50 peer-reviewed publications on topics including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), mechanical circulatory support (MCS), and transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE).

Management Experience

Dr Ashworth is the Consultant Clinical Advisor in the Interventional Procedures Programme for National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). He also has experience as the Consultant Clinical Advisor for the Health Service Investigation Board review of maternal investigations. In addition, Dr Ashworth is the Deputy Clinical Director and Quality and Safety lead for the Cardiothoracic Critical Care.

Teaching & Training

Dr Ashworth is frequently invited to give national and international lectures on both extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and mechanical circulatory support (MCS).
