Overview

Medico-Legal experience

Dr Ashworth has been an expert witness in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine for a number of years. He is registered with the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL), the National Crime Agency (NCA), and the UK Register of Expert Witnesses. He enjoys a full medico-legal practice instructed by both Claimant and Defendant law firms in personal injury and clinical negligence actions. Dr Ashworth holds weekly medico-legal clinics in Manchester but is happy to travel in order to conduct home and prison visits. His Claimant/Defendant ratio split is approximately 80/20 and he can usually turnaround reports within 6-8 weeks, sooner if required.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Dr Ashworth has been a substantive Consultant in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia & Intensive Care Medicine since 2012. He is the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) Deputy Director at the Wythenshawe Hospital, part of the University of Manchester NHS Foundation Trust, and has led the hospital in their development and implementation of an extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) programme, which very few centres in the UK currently offer.

Clinical Interests

Dr Ashworth has a special interest in cardiothoracic anaesthesia, anaesthesia for heart and lung transplantation, general and regional anaesthesia, and intensive care medicine. He has a particular clinical interest in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), mechanical circulatory support (MCS) and transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE).

Research Interests

Dr Ashworth has over 50 peer-reviewed publications on topics including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), mechanical circulatory support (MCS), and transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE).

Management Experience

Dr Ashworth is a Consultant Clinical Advisor in the Interventional Procedures Programme at National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

Teaching & Training

Dr Ashworth is frequently invited to give national and international lectures on both extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and mechanical circulatory support (MCS).
