Clinical Practice & Experience
Mr Sharma has been a Consultant in General and Colorectal / Lower Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgery at the Wythenshawe Hospital, part of the University of Manchester NHS Foundation Trust, since 2012. He is the Clinical Governance and Mortality Review Lead for General Surgery. He is care of the critically ill surgical patient (CCrISP) and advanced trauma life support (ATLS) trained and is Joint Advisory Group (JAG) accredited for upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy and colonoscopy. Mr Sharma is currently leading multiple local audits and is the Trust Lead for several national and international audits. He has a tertiary pelvic floor referral practice offering all aspects of management of complex pelvic floor disorders.
Clinical Interests
Mr Sharma has a special interest in colonoscopy, laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery for colorectal cancer, small bowel malignancies, diverticular disease, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), pelvic floor pathology including rectal prolapse, intrarectal intussusception, sphincter reconstruction (traumatic sphincter injuries including obstetric injuries), ileostomy formation and reversal. He also has a special interest in transanal endoscopic microsurgery, complex perianal fistulas and incisional hernia surgery.
Research Interests
Mr Sharma is actively involved in research on topics including pelvic floor surgery and laparoscopic/minimally invasive colorectal surgery for cancer and inflammatory bowel disease.
Summary of Publications
Mr Sharma is a reviewer for the British Journal of Surgery (BJS), Colorectal Disease and Frontline Gastroenterology and has over 60 peer-reviewed publications.
Teaching & Training
Mr Sharma is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester and is an Educational and Clinical Supervisor for foundation year, core trainees and specialty trainees. He is also involved in third- and fifth-year medical student teaching. He is a co-supervisor for an MD/PhD research student at the University of Manchester.

Medico-Legal experience
Mr Sharma has been an expert witness in general and colorectal / lower gastrointestinal (GI) surgery for a number of years. He is registered with the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL), the National Crime Agency (NCA), and the UK Register of Expert Witnesses. He enjoys a full medico-legal practice instructed by both Claimant and Defendant law firms in personal injury and clinical negligence actions. Mr Sharma holds weekly medico-legal clinics in Manchester but is happy to travel in order to conduct home and prison visits. His Claimant/Defendant ratio split is approximately 80/20 and he can usually turnaround reports within 6-8 weeks, sooner if required.
