Renal failure, or kidney failure, happens when the kidneys can no longer effectively filter waste and excess fluids from the blood. It can be acute, which develops quickly over hours or days due to causes like severe dehydration, infections, or injuries, or chronic, which progresses slowly over months or years, often due to long-term conditions such as diabetes or hypertension. Symptoms typically include swelling, fatigue, and difficulty breathing.
