Medico-Legal experience
Dr Heyes enjoys a full medico-legal practice and is instructed by both Claimant and Defendant law firms in personal injury and clinical negligence cases.
Clinical Practice & Experience
Dr Heyes graduated from University of Birmingham in 2009 with honours. He completed his foundation training in the UK in 2011 before moving to Australia to work in Emergency Medicine. He returned to the UK in 2013 and completed his core medical training and subsequently a Lung Transplant Fellowship at Wythenshawe Hospital in 2017. After commencing Specialist Respiratory Training in the North West he obtained his Certificate of Completion of Training ( CCT) from the Royal College of Physicians in 2022.
He has been a substantive Respiratory and General Medical Consultant at North Manchester General Hospital since 2022. This role includes general medical on calls, Respiratory in-patient work, pleural and lung cancer clinics. Dr Heyes has procedural expertise including; flexible bronchoscopy, Endobronchial ultrasound, pleural aspirations, chest drain insertion, indwelling pleural catheter and medical thoracoscopy. Dr Heyes is a member of the Great Manchester Lung Cancer committee and diagnostic subgroup aiming to promote early diagnosis whilst standardising care across the region.
Clinical Interests
Dr Heyes has procedural expertise in flexible bronchoscopy, Endobronchial ultrasound transbronchial needle aspiration, Seldinger chest drain insertion, surgical chest drain insertion, thoracic ultrasound, indwelling pleural catheter insertion and local anesthetic medical thoracoscopy.
Research Interests
Dr Heyes is a member of the editorial board for a newly developed peer review journal, Clinical Focus Respiratory Medicine Journal – Rila Publications.
Management Experience
Throughout his career Dr Heyes has demonstrated engagement with leadership roles. He was previously part of an IT Infrastructure Development Group at the Stepping Hill Hospital, focusing on stream-lining and modernising systems to optimise efficiency and productivity. During his rotation at the Royal Blackburn Hospital, he was selected by colleagues to represent the Medical Registrar cohort as the Trainee Representative at the Medical Education Board; through this role he was involved in re-organising the medical handover and post take ward rounds to optimise patient care.
Within his role as Pleural lead at North Manchester General Hospital he has developed of a Trust wide intrapleural fibrinolytic guideline. As the Deputy Lung Cancer Lead he has helped developed weekly lung cancer improvement group that has seen significant improvements in the diagnostic pathway and patient outcomes. He helped secure funding for an additional fifteen lung cancer CT slots per week with rapid radiology reporting within four hours. This enabled an eight day reduction for patients on the lung cancer pathway.
As a member of the Greater Manchester lung cancer committee and diagnostic subgroup member he has been involved in the roll out of a regional single queue system for medical thoracoscopy, the use of artificial intelligence within radiology, Prehab4 cancer and circulating tumor DNA projects.
Summary of Publications
Dr Heyes has prepared multiple articles, posters, and presentations. His publications have focused on the topics of interstitial lung disease, impact of COVID-19, reducing time to treatment, COPD, aspergillosis, lung transplant, lung cancer, endobronchial ultrasound, work-related asthma, and much more.
Teaching & Training
Dr Heyes is the fifth-year medical student teaching lead in the Respiratory Department at the North Manchester General Hospital since 2023 and has received excellent feedback. He has taught on the regional advanced pleural skills and advanced bronchoscopy skills at the Wythenshawe Hospital. Dr Heyes and the respiratory team at North Manchester General Hospital were awarded the 2nd highest ranking in the national GMC specialty trainee survey, reflecting his dedication and expertise in training.
