Overview

Medico-Legal experience

Dr Shanbhag has been an expert witness in gynaecology for a number of years and has undergone expert witness training. Dr Shanbhag enjoys a full medicolegal practice representing both claimants and defendants in cases of sexual offences, breach of duty, causation and clinical negligence. Dr Shanbhag is happy to be instructed by both Police and Prosecution Services as well as Defendant law firms.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Dr Shanbhag qualified in 1995 from Goa University in India with the qualifications Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. She later specialised and completed her postgraduate Masters degree in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. She has also completed her subspecialty training in Gynaecological Oncology. Since 2009, Dr Shanbhag has practised as a Consultant Gynaecologist and Gynaecological Oncologist in the UK and is an accredited Colposcopist with the British Society for the Study of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (BSCCP).

Clinical Interests

Dr Shanbhag is a Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) approved sub-specialist in Gynaecological Oncological surgery with dual accreditation in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Her expertise in Gynaecological Oncology includes diagnosis, investigations and surgical management (robotic, laparoscopic and open) of all cancers of the female genital tract.

Dr Shanbhag also specialises in management of general gynaecological conditions such as menstrual problems, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, vulval disorders and pelvic masses. This expertise covers diagnosis and management (surgical and non surgical) of the same.

Dr Shanbhag is experienced in surgical management via Minimal access approach as well as the open approach for operations such as hysterectomy, oophorectomy, ovarian cystectomy, radical hysterectomy, pelvic and para-aortic lymphadenectomy and omentectomy.

She has attended the training in Essentials in Sexual offences examination and management (Adults and Adolescents) in Scotland in 2018. As a colposcopist and expert in vulvovaginal disorders, Dr Shanbhag confidently provide clinical opinion and expert reports in matters related to sexual offences.

Research Interests

Dr Shanbhag has published in precancerous disease of cervix, cervical cancer and ovarian cancer. Dr Shanbhag also has a specialist interest in audit and research in postoperative morbidity and Quality improvement.

Management Experience

Dr Shanbhag is the Clinical Services Lead for Gynaecology and Gynaecological Oncology. She is also the lead for Faster Diagnosis for cancer in the West Midlands Cancer Alliance. She has many years of experience of managing risk and addressing Datixes, complaints and claims within the NHS.

Teaching & Training

Dr Shanbhag is currently the deputy training program supervisor for the subspecialty Gynaecological Oncology program at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire and was the main program supervisor for the same in West of Scotland Deanery. She has been the preceptor for the RCOG advanced training module for gynaecological oncology for West Midlands deanery and was also the same for West of Scotland deanery. Dr Shanbhag is also an examiner for BSCCP and MRCOG exams, and preceptor and faculty for online webinars, simulation training and cadaveric dissection for Gynaecological anatomy and surgical techniques.
