Medico-Legal experience

Mr Shackcloth has been acting as an expert witness for 10 years. Mr Shackcloth enjoys a full medico-legal practice instructed by both Claimant and Defendant law firms in personal injury and clinical negligence cases.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Mr Shackcloth has been a Consultant Thoracic Surgeon at the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital since 2007. His practice covers all aspects of thoracic surgery, both benign and malignant. Mr Shackcloth is the designated Thoracic Surgeon for the Merseyside, Cheshire, Lancashire and Cumbria Sarcoma Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT). Mr Shacklecloth graduated from Manchester University in 1994 and completed his basic surgical training in Manchester. He then moved to Liverpool for his cardiothoracic training and was appointed a Consultant at the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital.

Clinical Interests

Mr Shackcloth has specialist interests in lung cancer, minimally invasive thoracic surgery, pulmonary metastasectomy, management of chest trauma, and training.

Research Interests

Mr Shacklecloth has a wide range of research interests within lung cancer, minimally invasive thoracic surgery, pulmonary metastasis, and more. He was a co-applicant on the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) sponsored VIOLET study. He was the Principle Investigator for the following studies: Sport study, Project Murray, TargetLung, Mesobank, PulMiCC, 100,000 genome project, Respond trial and Re-enforced staple reload study.

Management Experience

Mr Shackcloth led the design and update of the thoracic surgery database at the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital which has one of the largest cardiac and thoracic databases in the country. Mr Shackcloth led the redesign and update of the thoracic surgery database. Working closely with the audit department, he presented the overall thoracic workload, mortality and morbidity rates, training data at the monthly audit meetings using process control charts to detect changes in the practice and used evidence-based medicine to improve it. He has also audited the treatment of pneumothoraces pre and post BTS guidelines and presented the findings at regional and national meetings. Mr Shackcloth has participated in: Access to medicine scheme; and SHO, SpR teaching and assessments. Mr Shackcloth is an educational supervisor and is recognised as an excellent trainer by SHOs and SpRs in the hospital. Over 50% of cases under his care are carried out by trainees under his close supervision.

Summary of Publications

Mr Shackcloth has been a member of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines committees and has over 50 peer reviewed publications and has authored book chapters. He is a board Member of the British Association of Surgical Oncology and Associate Editor of the European Journal of Surgical Oncology. Mr Shackcloth’s research focuses on a vast range of topics including lung cancer, lung resection, pulmonary metasectomy, thoracic surgery, video assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy, chemoradiotherapy, and much more.

Teaching & Training

Mr Shacklecloth has been an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Liverpool since 2015; he has also carried out the following teaching/training:International: Mr Shackcloth has been instrumental in the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital (LHCH) being recognised as a training centre by Ethicon for Europe, Africa and the Middle East for VATS lobectomy. Consultants from China have visited LHCH to observe video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) lobectomy. He is a member of the Faculty at Leeds international VATS course. Mr Shackcloth taught at EACTS Thoracic Surgery course, was invited lecture to Nordic Sugeons at EACTS on VATS lobectomy, and Invited Speaker at the Royal College of Surgeons of Sri LankaNationally Mr Shackcloth was invited to lecture at the British Association of Surgical Oncology annual meeting, an invited Speaker at the President's meeting Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He organised 1/2 day educational session at SCTS annual university day, and taught on the Royal College of Surgeons Summer School and thoracic course. Surgeons from other hospitals visit LHCH to learn VATS lobectomy and Mr Shackcloth then mentors them setting up their programme. He is also member of faculty at various national VATS meetings and Birmingham Review CourseRegional Mr Shackcloth organised two modern management of emphysema 1/2 day seminar. He was also invited to lecture at the regional colorectal surgeons meeting and has contributed to the regional teaching sessions of SpRs in CT surgery,oncology, respiratory medicine and anaesthesia. He has organised VATS course for theatre nursing staff and two full day teaching sessions for ward nurses.
