Professor Brownson was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Liverpool in 1998 where he was instrumental in establishing the Liverpool Upper Limb Unit as a centre of excellence for shoulder and elbow surgery. Professor Brownson’s clinical practice is focused exclusively on shoulder and elbow surgery. He runs a monthly complex shoulder instability clinic that accepts tertiary referrals from out of region. Professor Brownson is recognised for his expertise in arthroscopic shoulder surgery and has been regularly invited to lecture and carry out live surgical demonstrations at courses across Europe and the United States. He has previously treated a significant number of elite athletes including players from 10 Premiership football teams and he was the upper limb surgeon to Liverpool Football Club from 2000 to 2017. In 2019 Professor Brownson was appointed an Honorary Clinical Professor at the University of Liverpool.
Clinical Interests
Professor Brownson has achieved International recognition in his chosen sub-speciality of shoulder and elbow surgery and particularly in the management of sports related shoulder injuries. He has been regularly invited to lecture at both national and international meetings. Since 2010 he has given over 75 such presentations and has carried out 25 live surgical demonstrations. Of note, he has been invited to present on sports related shoulder injuries at the British Orthopaedic Association Instructional Course in 2012, the European Society for shoulder and elbow surgery in 2014 and 2017, the Indian Orthopaedic Association in 2015, the Swedish Orthopaedic Federation in 2015 and the British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma and Arthroscopy Association 2017. In 2017 Professor Brownson was invited by the President of the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) to be one of his Presidential guest speakers. In 2018 he was honored to be invited as a corresponding member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Society (ASES).
