Medico-Legal experience
Professor Brownson has a track record of providing clear independent medical reports to the legal profession for over 20 years. He is fully conversant with the restricted timescales for civil litigation, the limitations of expertise and the absolute need for independent, balanced consideration. He is fully aware of the requirements of CPR35 and its Practice Direction.
Professor Brownson brings to bear: Twenty years of experience at preparing medico-legal expert witness reports; He has attended courses on the preparation of medicolegal reports and attendance at Court; He has experience of giving expert evidence under cross examination in Court (1 occasion in last 3 years).
Currently he accepts around 100 medico-legal instructions per year with approximately an equal balance between claimant and defendant work. Professor Brownson’s reports deal exclusively with shoulder and elbow conditions, including medical negligence cases (breach of duty, causation, condition and prognosis).
Clinical Practice & Experience
Professor Brownson was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Liverpool in 1998 where he was instrumental in establishing the Liverpool Upper Limb Unit as a centre of excellence for shoulder and elbow surgery. Professor Brownson’s clinical practice is focused exclusively on shoulder and elbow surgery. He runs a monthly complex shoulder instability clinic that accepts tertiary referrals from out of region. Professor Brownson is recognised for his expertise in arthroscopic shoulder surgery and has been regularly invited to lecture and carry out live surgical demonstrations at courses across Europe and the United States. He has previously treated a significant number of elite athletes including players from 10 Premiership football teams and he was the upper limb surgeon to Liverpool Football Club from 2000 to 2017. In 2019 Professor Brownson was appointed an Honorary Clinical Professor at the University of Liverpool.
Clinical Interests
Professor Brownson has achieved International recognition in his chosen sub-speciality of shoulder and elbow surgery and particularly in the management of sports related shoulder injuries. He has been regularly invited to lecture at both national and international meetings. Since 2010 he has given over 75 such presentations and has carried out 25 live surgical demonstrations. Of note, he has been invited to present on sports related shoulder injuries at the British Orthopaedic Association Instructional Course in 2012, the European Society for shoulder and elbow surgery in 2014 and 2017, the Indian Orthopaedic Association in 2015, the Swedish Orthopaedic Federation in 2015 and the British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma and Arthroscopy Association 2017. In 2017 Professor Brownson was invited by the President of the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) to be one of his Presidential guest speakers. In 2018 he was honored to be invited as a corresponding member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Society (ASES).
Research Interests
Professor Brownson continues to be actively involved in upper limb research. In addition, he continues to be involved in aircraft passenger safety as a member of the international – IBrace group.
Management Experience
Professor Brownson has held various prestigious positions within the medical community. Notably, he served as President of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS) from 2017 to 2019, following his 13-year tenure on the BESS Council from 2010 to 2023. Additionally, he played a pivotal role as the managing partner of the Bone & Joint Centre UK LLP from its establishment in 2005 until 2023. His influence extended beyond BESS and the Bone & Joint Centre, as he contributed as a member of the National Medical Advisory Group for Nuffield Healthcare from 2020 to 2024. In this capacity, Professor Brownson provided expert advice in his subspeciality of Orthopaedics (Upper Limb) and represented the interests of the Northwest region.

Professor Brownson has authored and co-authored six sets of BESS/BOA (British Orthopaedic Association/British Elbow Society) National Care Pathways as below:
Traumatic shoulder instability, Frozen shoulder, Shoulder arthritis, Subacromial pain and Elbow replacement surgery.
Professor Brownson has 25 other publications in peer reviewed journals, covering subjects such as; Clavicle fractures, Shoulder dislocation, Distal biceps rupture, Proximal humeral fracture fixation, Elbow kinematics and Shoulder decompression surgery.
