Medico-Legal experience

Mr Narayan is registered with the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL), the National Crime Agency (NCA), and the UK Register of Expert Witnesses. He is happy to be instructed by both Claimant and Defendant law firms in personal injury and clinical negligence actions. Mr Narayan can usually turn around reports within 6-8 weeks, sooner if required.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Mr Narayan has been a Consultant in Orthopaedic Trauma and Limb Reconstruction at the Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust since 2002. He began his medical career in India in 1987. He passed the FRCS (Surg) in 1995, and commenced Specialist Registrar training in trauma and orthopaedic surgery in the Liverpool Rotation in 1996, completing his final year of training in Belfast at the Royal Victoria Hospital, the Musgrave Park Hospital, and the Queen’s University Belfast.

Mr Narayan’s elective practice is exclusively in:

  • The management of complications of fracture treatment; including non-union, malunion, infected non-union, and osteomyelitis;
  • The treatment of limb deformity; including inequality of limb lengths, using internal and external fixation with the use of Ilizarov frames, Taylor Spatial Frames, etc;
  • The treatment of native bone infection such as osteomyelitis; and
  • The treatment of complex pathology and deformities of the ankle and hindfoot.

Mr Narayan’s trauma practice consists of the management of general orthopaedic trauma and outpatient management of soft tissue injuries, complex fractures, open fractures, and the use of circular frames, and multiple injury patients and polytrauma. He is routinely referred patients with complex or ‘problem’ fractures of the appendicular skeleton, referred from other hospitals in the region, including Lancashire, North Wales and the Isle of Man.

Mr Narayan runs Orthoplastic Clinics and operates with plastic surgeons regularly. He also participates in Multidisciplinary Clinics with neurologists, neurosurgeons, and rehabilitation physicians in treating skeletal problems after neurological injury and trauma.

Clinical Interests

Mr Narayan treats orthopaedic trauma and major trauma, including patients with multiple injuries. His specific area of acute trauma expertise is in treating complex fractures of both upper and lower limbs, multiply injured patients, open fractures, and the use of external fixation devices such as Ilizarov frames for severe fractures. His entire elective practice is in the treatment of complications of fractures and fracture treatment, and in limb deformity.

Research Interests

Mr Narayan’s research interests include the management and outcomes of fractures and limb deformities using internal and external fixation. He has attended and presented at over 100 courses and conferences on orthopaedics and trauma worldwide.

Management Experience

Mr Narayan was a Programme Director for specialist orthopaedic training for the Mersey Orthopaedic Rotation from 2008 till 2012. He was a Clinical Lead for Limb Reconstruction, Spine, Foot and Ankle, and Tumour Services from 2010 till 2011. He was an associate Clinical Director for Trauma at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital from 2011 till 2016, and continues to be the Lead for Limb Reconstruction Surgery.

Summary of Publications

Mr Narayan has published four book chapters, two dissertations, over 30 articles in peer-reviewed journals, and has presented over 60 presentations at global conferences for the British Limb Reconstruction Society, the British Orthopaedic Association, and more. His publications and presentations include research on trauma and fracture healing, skeletal deformity, fracture-related infection, and in the field of limb reconstruction.

Teaching & Training

Mr Narayan has been an Examiner for the Intercollegiate Surgical Board since 2009, for the International Surgical Board since 2017, and an Assessor from 2019. He has also been an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Edge Hill University since 2012, and was an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Liverpool from 2008 till 2016. He has been a Co-Supervisor for the International Limb Reconstruction since 2006, and has been invited and guest lectured at over 30 lectures across the world.
