Overview

Medico-Legal experience

Dr Murthy has previous provided non-expert medical witness testimony for criminal cases, both in the Sherriff Court and High Courts of Edinburgh. Dr Murthy has provided statements directly to the Procurator Fiscal in person at their request, and has provided pre-cognition to legal teams. Dr Murthy has produced a report for a Coroner’s inquest and given evidence in person at a Coroner’s inquest. Dr Murthy is currently undergoing his expert witness training. Dr Murthy is registered with APIL, the National Crime Agency (NCA) and the UK Register of Expert Witnesses. He is happy to be instructed by Claimant and Defendant law firms in both personal injury and clinical negligence cases. Dr Murthy is happy to conduct home visits and can produce reports within 6-8 weeks, sooner if required.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Dr Murthy currently holds a post as Consultant in Emergency Medicine at the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh; a large urban teach hospital that receives major trauma and is the only adult Emergency Department in the city. Dr Murthy also dedicates a significant portion to the Emergency Department at the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People in Edinburgh.

 

Dr Murthy graduated from the Royal College of Emergency Medicine in 2012, having graduated with MBChB BSc Hons (Pharmacology) from the University of Edinburgh in 2004.

Clinical Interests

Dr Murthy has a special interest in Paediatric Emergency Medicine, dedicating a fifth of his clinical work to the Emergency Department at the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People in Edinburgh.

Research Interests

Dr Murthy sits on the National Hip Fracture Advisory Group for the Scottish Government, participating in the research subcommittee for the National Hip Fracture Database.

Management Experience

Dr Murthy leads the development of the orthopaedic and musculoskeletal pathway at the Royal Infirmary, regularly liaising with colleagues in the associated specialties. Dr Murthy has developed the neck of femur fracture pathway for the local hospital, in addition to the virtual fracture clinic system and non-operative fracture pathways.Across the three emergency medicine sites in Lothian, Dr Murthy has been involved with the regional training for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) incidents.Further, Dr Murthy is the Emergency Department’s Sedation Lead and has created the regional Lothian Sedation Committee with his colleagues.

In addition to the below publications, Dr Murthy represents Emergency Medicine on the Scottish Hip Fracture National Steering Group and authors on the national report on hip fractures, contributing to the sections relating to performance in the Emergency Department against the national standards.Gillies, M, et al. Teaching & Training

Dr Murthy has been an Advanced Trauma Life Support Instruction for eight years and regularly teaches the course locally and nationally. Further, Dr Murthy teaches medical students and is a Honorary Senior Lecturer and Professional Mentor at the Edinburgh University.Dr Murthy teaches and supervises Emergency Medicine trainees from foundation level to senior registrar level, in addition to training specialty doctors and GP trainees in Emergency Medicine. Dr Murthy regularly assesses these skills in workplace-based assessments and attends the Annual Review of Clinical Performances (ARCPs).

Prizes and Awards

Following election in 2019, Dr Murthy represents South East Scotland on the Scottish Board of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine.
